Once again the Beyer household had quite a week. We got to go to an Indians game and then trekked over to Illinois for the Iroquois County Fair, the county fair I grew up attending. Thanks to my sister's husband, Boo gets to show a pig each year in the carcass class. Carcass class you ask. The pig is shown live and then they will butcher the pig to look at the quality and quantity of meat and judge it this way as well. After all that is why we have pigs. For meat.
It was a good day for Boo.
He had quite the cheering section. My "Chicago" cousins even made the hour plus trip down at the wee hours of the morning to make the 8 am show. I think it helped that my niece and nephew were showing their calves right after Boo showed. And of course proud Grandma and Grandpa, plus Aunts and Uncles, cousins, and friends were there too.
Now this was Boo's third year showing, so he did a great job maneuvering his very large pig around the show ring. The pig had lots of energy and curious tendencies.
Check out those hams;)
Since Boo's pig outweighed a few of its competitors by more than 100 pounds, it was no surprise to his Uncle that he took first. Boo on the other hand was surprised and forgot about his pig for a minute.
But, he remembered thanks to some hollering from Uncle. But the excitement of the blue ribbon was still there after the pig loaded the truck for the butcher. To top his blue ribbon, we found out tonight he won the meat judging as well! Woo-Hoo! Just like Wilbur from Charlotte's Web, "That is some good pig!"
Miss Princess even got a picture with the Pork Queen. I am sure this will be the next thing she aspires to be in the future. Big thanks to a very nice queen to pose for a quick pic with a little admirer.
So, in honor of the pig, I am featuring some pork dishes from last week. And since I haven't been in the kitchen most of the week, you all don't want to read about how to make a ham sandwich on the fly.

Wow what a great experience for your little guy. My kids grew up showing horses in 4-H. We spent many days at fairs over the years. Thanks so much for featuring my recipe this week. I bring another pork dish "Spicy Southwest Pork Fingers". See my blog post for the story behind these. I posted this in June, but did not know about this party then. Hope it is OK to share it now.

Congratulations to Boo! I showed market wethers and beef cattle for ten years at our 4-H fair, and I remember it as an absolutely wonderful learning experience. Hope he is enjoying it as much as I did!
Thank you for featuring my Asian lettuce wraps this week. I added another recipe today, for crispy-skinned roast chicken with sausage stuffing (kinda like 'two hunks of meat Monday'), and I look forward to stopping by again next week!

I love that kids get involved in the fairs so young! And wow, congrats too Boo & his piggy! We only see carcass classes at our state fair, which is at the end of show season so a lot of people dump their (I showed lambs) lambs there so they don't have to take them to the sale barn... ๐

CONGRATS BOO! Love this post. I absolutely hooted that you are going to be home 4 nights this week to cook. Me...only 1 to 2 nights. Seriously summer is busy.

I had to get a good little chuckle out of Boo and his pig. We come from two very different worlds, my kids would be crying about how sad it is that the pig will die soon. Even though they love ham.
We get our beef from a farm behind our neighborhood. We can see the cows from our neighbors backyard. It makes them sad all the time, especially when I joke and say, "eat up Bessie, we want you nice and juicy next month".
Ah well, in honor of Boo's pig I linked up some pork chops with my homemade shake and bake recipe and a peach glaze. Enjoy!!!

My nieces show sheep at one of the county fairs in Wisconsin. It's a great, wholesome activity for kids. Your little boy is adorable! I am surprised he wasn't afraid of such a huge animal. Pigs can be kinda mean, can't they?
