The best chocolate chip cookies you will have are these Amish Chocolate Chip Pudding Cookies if you are looking for a soft chocolate chip cookie recipe. You will never use another cookie recipe again after making these cookies. Now, granted this chocolate chip cookie recipe will make nearly 75 cookies, so you will need some friends to share the cookies with after you make them. I got this recipe from my friend, Amy, and the kids call them Amy's cookies.
These chocolate chip cookies are soft and delicate with rich buttery, vanilla flavors from the butter, butter flavored Crisco, and instant vanilla pudding being part of the cookie dough. I, of course, can't control myself by just eating one. I love the pudding cookies so much I have also made white chocolate macadamia nut pudding cookies and strawberry cheesecake pudding cookies.
Why add pudding to cookies?
Amish chocolate chip pudding cookies combine traditional cookie ingredients with a unique combination of shortening, butter, and pudding to make these moist pudding cookies irresistible. The instant pudding makes the cookies so soft and moist. Pudding can also add a lot of flavor to the cookies.
The instant pudding POWDER is all that is needed. Do not make the pudding according package direction.
Obviously, the staples like flour, sugar, and eggs are in these cookies, but here is a sneak into what else you will need.
- Instant Pudding - Vanilla or French Vanilla flavored pudding is what I use for the traditional chocolate chip cookie.
- Eggs - Large eggs are best. Eggshell color does not matter.
- Brown Sugar - Light brown sugar is what I have in my pantry.
- White Sugar - Granulated white sure not powdered sugar.
- Butter - Regular old stick butter is what you need here. No fake butter or margarine.
- Shortening - I buy the sticks of shortening because I think it is easier for measuring.
- Vanilla - Real vanilla is what I have used, but imitation should work fine too.
- Flour - All Purpose flour is what works just fine for this recipe.
- Baking Soda - The orange box of baking soda to make sure they rise.
- Salt - A little salt makes the sweetness better. Don't ask me white.
- Chocolate Chips - I love the Ghiradelli semi-sweet chocolate chips. But the Nestle or Hershey's brands can work too.
How to Make Amish Chocolate Chip Pudding Cookies
This chocolate chip cookie recipe makes an enormous amount of cookies. Seriously, like 75 cookies. It easily can be split into a third. One-third of a batch gives you about two dozen cookies.
The secret is the pudding mix. That and melting the Crisco. Mix the ingredients in a large stand mixer if you are making the full batch. Start by beating the eggs and then mixing the sugars, pudding, vanilla, butter, and shortening. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, soda, and salt together. Slowly add the dry ingredients.
Spoon these cookies onto a cookie sheet and bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes. Every oven is different so it may take longer or less time to bake these cookies in your oven, especially depending on the size of the cookies. When you pull them out of the oven when they are just starting to brown around the edges. Let the cookies cool briefly on the pan. Then transfer them to a newspaper instead of racks. The pudding makes them soft and could literally fall through cooling racks.
Enjoy these cookies for a long time by freezing them too. I have had good luck freezing this cookie recipe.
Variations to Pudding Chip Cookies Recipe
Just like I switched up these cookies from the original vanilla pudding and chocolate chips, here are other ideas to switch up the flavors.
- Pumpkin Pudding - add pumpkin pudding instead of vanilla and use the chocolate chips still for a pumpkin chocolate chip cookie.
- Butterscotch Pudding - add butterscotch pudding for a more blondie-style cookie along with pecans instead. Butterscotch chips or white chocolate chips work with these too.
- Banana Pudding- add banana pudding with chocolate chips for some banana chocolate chip cookies.
- Strawberry Cheesecake Pudding Cookies - Add diced strawberries to the cookie recipe and substitute cheesecake pudding and white chocolate chips for a delicious strawberry cheesecake cookie.
See the White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookie Recipe that uses white chocolate pudding.
Best Way to Store and Freeze Homemade Cookies
These white chocolate chip cookies keep well on the counter and in the freezer.
- Storing - Keep these pudding cookies on the counter in an air-tight container. Don't worry they will be gone in less than 3 days.
- Freezing Cookies - These cookies also stand up well to freezing for up to 3 months. Be sure to double-wrap or bag the cookies for the freezer.
- Freezing Dough - You can also freeze the dough for these pudding cookies. Just be sure to scoop out individual scoops of dough so that way you can just take a few frozen cookie dough balls out when you want to make some cookies.

Wondering about freezing half of the dough? Has anyone tried it with this recipe? - not sure of the outcome with the pudding in there.
Otherwise, I freeze lots of dough for my parents to use when they want a fresh dozen cookies!

Stupid Question : are you adding the vanilla pudding mix as is ? Or are you actually making it into pudding ?
Leah
Add it just as the powder. Great question!
