How to Make Cubed Steak in the Crock Pot

Beef cube steaks are an affordable cut of meat. Most people eat cubed steaks as country-fried steak. However, cubed steak in the crock pot is an easy alternative to pan frying the steaks. To make this cubed steak recipe, begin by mixing the soups, vegetables, and seasonings together. I had some leftover diced green peppers, chopped green onions and sliced mushrooms from salads the night before, so I added them into the mix as well. If you don’t have veggies, you will be fine without them.

Place the cubed beef steaks into the crock pot. Pour the mixture over top of the cubed steaks and cook on low for 8 hours in the crock pot.

Remove the steaks from the crock pot. If you want slightly thicker gravy, dissolve a little cornstarch in water and add to the liquid in the crock pot. Serve over a big pile of mashed potatoes, rice or even egg noodles.

Substitutions for Cube Steak with Gravy

  1. Beef Cubed Steaks: Substitute pork chops, chicken breasts, or chicken thighs. Any of these meats will work well in a slow cooker and absorb the flavors of the soup and seasoning mixes.
  2. Ranch Dressing Mix: Homemade ranch seasoning mix can be made if you don’t have a packet of ranch dressing seasoning mix. Combine 1 tablespoon dried parsley, 1 teaspoon dried dill, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon dried basil, and 1/2 teaspoon dried chives.
  3. Italian Dressing Mix: The same thing can be done for Italian seasoning mix. Homemade Italian Dressing Mix can be made by combining 1 tablespoon dried oregano, 2 teaspoons dried basil, 2 teaspoons dried thyme, 1 teaspoon dried rosemary, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, and 1/2 teaspoon sugar.
  4. French Onion Soup: A substitute for a can of French Onion Soup is beef broth with caramelized onions. Sauté 1-2 sliced onions in butter until caramelized, then add them to 1 1/2 cups of beef broth.
  5. Cream of Mushroom Soup: Cream of chicken soup or homemade cream sauce with mushrooms can be substituted for a can of cream of mushroom soup. Check out the homemade cream of mushroom soup, which is also gluten-free.
  6. Mushrooms: Don’t like mushrooms? Try Zucchini or eggplant in its place. Both of these vegetables will absorb the flavors of the dish and provide a similar texture.
  7. Green Peppers: Red bell peppers, yellow bell peppers, or poblano peppers can also all be used instead of green peppers.
  8. Green or White Onions: Leeks, shallots, or red onions are perfect substitutes to white or green onions.

Tips:

  • If you want a thicker gravy, you can thicken it with a little cornstarch.
  • If you don’t have any cubed steak, you can use boneless beef chuck roast or beef shoulder.
  • If you don’t have any French onion soup, you can use chicken broth or vegetable broth instead.
  • You can add your favorite vegetables to the crock pot, such as carrots, celery, or mushrooms.

  1. Hi, would there be A substitute for the cream of mushroom soup? I’m allergic. The recipe sounds great, but I’m not able to use the soup. Thank you.
