Salisbury steak is a classic American dish that's easy to make in the crockpot. I love using frozen hamburger patties to make quick and easy Salisbury steaks that are flavored with French onion soup mix. It's a simple weeknight meal the whole family will love.
This was inspired by my low-carb one-pan Salisbury steak recipe. That recipe and my Italian hamburger steak sandwiches both use premade ground beef patties.

Ingredients for Salisbury Steaks
The ingredients for my version of crockpot salisbury steak recipe are definitely pantry and freezer staples.
- Frozen hamburger patties - Whenever we butcher a whole beef, we have premade hamburger patties made. The frozen patties can also be bought in the freezer section at Sam's Club or your favorite grocery store. As the patties slow cook, they become tender beef patties.
- French onion soup - A can of French onion soup is magical in so many recipes. I always have multiple cans on the pantry shelf. If you don't love onions, just beef broth can be used in its place.
- Cream of mushroom soup - A can of cream of mushroom soup makes the gravy creamy and gives it a bit of thickening.
- Onion soup mix - The packet of dry onion soup mix is truly a packet full of flavor. These are staples in my kitchen for a quick prep for recipes just like this one.
- Worcestershire sauce
- garlic
- Sliced mushrooms
- Hamburger or steak seasoning - Gourmet burger seasoning is my favorite versatile beef seasoning salt.

How to Make Crock Pot Salisbury Steak
A traditional crock pot or a casserole crock pot can be used to make this recipe.
Start by placing the frozen hamburger patties in the crock pot. Season each patty with steak seasoning. After one layer of hamburgers spread half the sliced mushrooms over the top.
In a separate bowl, mix the garlic, dry onion soup mix, cream of mushroom soup, French onion soup, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir until well combined and the mixture forms a smooth consistency.
Season the remaining patties and lay over the top of the first layer of patties and mushrooms.
Pour the French onion soup mixture over the hamburger patties. Cook on low for three to four hours.
Once the cooking time is complete, your Crock Pot Salisbury Steaks are ready to be served. Spoon the rich gravy over the patties and pair them with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, party potatoes, steamed rice, or buttered egg noodles. Lots of people also serve Salisbury steak with carrots, peas, or green beans
Hint: For a thicker gravy add cornstarch to a little bit of water and whisk into the gravy after the cooking. This can then cook for another 30 minutes. Removing all the patties and then placing them back in the gravy will make it easier to mix.
Substitutions
Don't have the exact ingredients for this recipe, or need to make it meet a special dietary need? Here are suggested substitutions.
- Frozen Hamburger Patties:
- Ground beef: If you prefer, you can use fresh lean ground beef instead of pre-made frozen patties. Shape the ground beef into patties for a more hands-on approach.
- French Onion Soup:
- Onion soup mix: If you don't have canned French onion soup, you can use a dry onion soup mix and add water according to the package instructions. Alternatively, make your own onion soup by sautéing sliced onions in a bit of oil until caramelized and then adding beef broth.
- Dry Onion Soup Mix:
- Homemade seasoning blend: Create your own onion soup mix substitute by combining onion powder, garlic powder, dried thyme, and a pinch of salt. Adjust the quantities to suit your taste.
- Cream of Mushroom Soup:
- Gluten free cream of mushroom soup: Either buy a gluten free cream of mushroom soup or make an easy gluten free mushroom soup recipe at home.
Variations
The beauty of a recipe like Crock Pot Salisbury Steaks is that it's versatile and can be adapted to suit different tastes. Here are some variations you can try:
- Cheese-Stuffed Salisbury Steaks:
- Place a cube of your favorite cheese (such as Swiss or cheddar) in the center of each hamburger patty before cooking. As the patties cook, the cheese will melt, creating a gooey, flavorful surprise.
- Herb-Infused Gravy:
- Enhance the flavor of the gravy by adding fresh or dried herbs. Thyme, rosemary, or a bit of sage can bring a delightful herbaceous note to the dish.
- Mushroom Lover's Delight:
- If you love mushrooms, sauté a variety of mushrooms (like cremini or shiitake) in a pan until golden brown and add them to the crock pot for an earthy and savory twist.
- Spicy Salisbury Steaks:
- Add a kick to your dish by incorporating some red pepper flakes, hot sauce, or diced jalapeños to the gravy mixture for a spicy Salisbury steak experience.
- Vegetarian Salisbury Steaks:
- Swap out the meat for plant-based alternatives like veggie burgers or vegan patties. Adjust the cooking time accordingly to ensure they cook through.
- Creamy Gravy with Sour Cream:
- Mix a dollop of sour cream into the gravy before serving for a rich and creamy texture. This adds a luxurious touch to the dish.

Equipment and Ingredients for Salisbury Steaks
Everything you need to make this recipe along with those frozen hamburger patties. Be sure to check out my Amazon store to use the same things I did to make this recipe.
Storing Leftovers
The leftovers can be stored in a glass or plastic container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. Be sure to save all the leftover gravy too. This will keep the hamburger steaks from drying out. Reheat in the microwave for 1 minute, then flip the steak over and heat in 30-second increments until completely heated.
Freeze the leftovers for future meals by placing in a freezer plastic bag, laying flat in the freezer. Label with date and contents. Store up to 3 months. Reheat after thawed in a large skillet.
Top tip
For a thicker gravy, remove the patties from the crock pot after they are done cooking. Then mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with a tablespoon or two of water. Mix and power into the gravy. Whisk to combine. Place the patties back in the gravy.
