When it comes to comfort food, Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes hit all the right notes. Combining the best of both worlds, this recipe brings together the flavors of a classic Philly cheesesteak with the messy goodness of sloppy joes. It’s an ideal weeknight dinner that can be made in under 30 minutes! Whether you're craving a hearty sandwich or want a new twist on an old favorite, this dish is sure to please.
I love anything with beef, peppers, and onions. Things like Philly Cheesesteak pizza and Philly Cheesesteak sliders are always a favorite dinner. I also love the speed of the skillet cubed steak sandwiches. However, my kids are always big fans of sloppy joes. So I combined the two fan favorite recipes for this ground beef version of Philly Cheesesteaks.

Ingredients for Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes
- Ground beef – The base of any good sloppy joe is hamburger! Ground beef provides the perfect texture and richness for this recipe. You can use 80/20 all the way to 93/7 ground beef in this. A little extra fat won't hurt though.
- Steak Seasoning - This is a recipe based on a steak recipe, so I used steak seasoning. But salt and pepper can also be used.
- Onion and Green Pepper—Green bell pepper and onion are classic Philly cheesesteak ingredients, and they bring sweetness and a little crunch.
- Garlic - Minced garlic cloves or the jarlic will work perfectly in this recipe.
- Butter - I used butter to add fat to the ground beef to make the roux with the flour and beef broth.
- Flour - I prefer flour roux over a cornstarch roux, but either can be used.
- Beef Broth – Adds depth to the flavor and keeps the meat nice and juicy.
- Worcestershire Sauce – A key ingredient that adds a tangy, savory flavor.
- Ketchup – For a touch of sweetness and to help bind the meat mixture.
- Pepper jack Cheese - The spice of pepper jack cheese gives an additional layer of flavor. Shred the cheese and have it ready. Swiss Cheese or Monterey Cheese can also be used.
- Provolone Cheese – Melted cheese is essential to any cheesesteak! Provolone gives a creamy, slightly sharp flavor, but you can also use mozzarella or American cheese.
- Buns – Soft sandwich rolls work best, but you can also serve the meat mixture on a hoagie roll for a more authentic Philly experience.
How to Make Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes?
The one thing to note about buying beef in bulk for a better price is that it is frozen. So, when I make supper, I have frozen, one-pound packages of ground beef. Quickly thaw the frozen beef in the microwave and then get it in a large pan or skillet.
- Cook the ground beef: In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat until fully cooked. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and steak seasoning.
- Sauté the vegetables: Add the diced onion and green pepper to the skillet with the browned ground beef. Top off with the minced garlic. Cook until the vegetables are soft and fragrant, about 4-5 minutes.
- Make the Cream Sauce: Stir in the butter until melted. Then add the flour and stir to completely blend into the beef and vegetables. Slowly add the beef broth and milk, stirring as you add. Let the mixture simmer for 5-10 minutes to thicken and allow the flavors to meld.
- Add the cheese: Once the meat mixture is ready, stir in the shredded pepper jack cheese. Cover the skillet and let the cheese melt for a minute or two.
Scoop the cheesy meat mixture onto your favorite hamburger buns or rolls, top with a slice of provolone cheese and enjoy!
If you love mushrooms, you can saute some and place on top of the sliced cheese for even more flavors in the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich.
Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes are a deliciously easy meal that brings all the comfort of a classic cheesesteak with the convenience of a sloppy joe. It’s the perfect family dinner that’s sure to become a staple in your home. Try this sloppy joe recipe today and let the melty cheese, savory meat, and soft buns make your meal unforgettable!
Tips for the Best Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes
Double the batch: These sloppy joes make great leftovers, so feel free to make extra and store them in the fridge for up to three days.
Use lean ground beef: For a healthier version, opt for 90% lean ground beef to reduce fat while maintaining flavor.
Add mushrooms: Sautéed mushrooms can enhance the Philly cheesesteak flavor even more!
Toast your buns: Toasting the buns before assembling adds a nice crunch and prevents the bread from getting soggy.
High-Protein Variations
For a high-protein twist, try swapping the ground beef for ground turkey, ground chicken, or even a plant-based meat substitute. You can also add extra cheese or mix in black beans for a protein boost while keeping all the classic Philly cheesesteak flavors.
